At some point during the level design process, a level beat chart will need to be made. This maps out how each level layout will be created. For example, if I were to read a game design document and see that the designers need a level built with a jungle setting, I would then try and create a chart that shows smooth level progression from the beginning to end. This shows an example of what the idea what a mood board process would look like.
As you can see, I was able to keep up with the same theme and "mood" of the level I wanted to create. I labeled each point in each level that I wanted to correspond to the level beat chart shown below. The only issue I encountered during this process was figuring out how long each point would take the player to clear. Below is how I wanted the progression to look on paper. This is basically an equation done in a spreadsheet that converted the progression to a chart.
