Balancing

The Cliché

This may sound cliché, but learning how to balance orcs, humans, and elves is something that I'd never thought I'd have to do. Before making a game, paperwork needs to be done. Game design documents, balancing spreadsheets and other document. Here we are looking at a step in the design process where we use excel or google sheets to balance the games characters.

Fresh Template

Starting from the beginning, you would name all of the characters and add the fields you need to define. Once that is done, all you need to do now is to add numerical values to each. This will then give your designers a way to balance the characters for future reference. You can also tie this spreadsheet to the game engine to make the changes in real-time.

It took longer than expected.

This use of a spreadsheet to balance characters was not at all easy. I had to think deeply how I wanted each character to be. Think about the end game. After testing this out a few times, we had to tweak some of the values. I learned that testing is also a very important job because without it some enemies may be overpowered. I can imagine the balancing spreadsheet for guns in shooter games or for different characters in arena games.
